Introduce hard and soft g and c and the rule applied. Use flash cards.

RULES

Whenever g or c is followed by e, i, or y, the sound heard is soft. Whenever g or c is followed by a, o, or u, the sound is hard. Soft g sounds like j and soft c sounds like s. Hard g is the regular sound of g as heard in the word gas. Hard c is the regular sound of c as heard in the word cat, when c sounds like k.
