INTERJECTION

Interjections are words of emotion that are thrown into a sentence. Examples might be the following: ALAS! I did the job too quickly. HEY! Are you going to the fair?

Interjections are exclamatory words used to express strong feeling or sudden emotion. The word interjection comes from two Latin words which mean to throw between. Interjections are thrown into the sentence to express some type of emotion such as disgust, joy, excitement, enthusiasm, etc. These words have no relation to other words in the sentence. They are merely thrown in to express emotion.

Examples:

Alas! This is the end!

Alas has nothing to do with the sentence.  It is just an emotional expression.  Alas is a word used to show some sort of sorrow or grief, even regret or a desire to turn around i.e. repent.  It can be an expression of compassion or it can reveal the emotion of fearing something is about to happen.  Alas can show apprehension.  It is just an interjection, something that is thrown into a sentence to give the expression of emotion.

Hey! Where are you going?

Hey is an expression which is meant to stop you in your tracks.  Hey (Pay attention to me!), I am talking to you.  Hey can express surprise, appreciation, pleasure or wonder.  It is just an interjection, something that is thrown into a sentence to give the expression of emotion.

Ha! I can't believe that.

Ha also expresses surprise or wonder.  It can be a shout of  triumph, an expression of puzzlement, or it can reveal irritation.  It is just an interjection, something that is thrown into a sentence to give the expression of emotion.

Good Heavens! Why did I do that?

Good Heavens is a word used in various phrases to express surprise.  It is just an interjection, something that is thrown into a sentence to give the expression of emotion.

Oh, oh! What happened to the tire?

Oh is a word used to express strong emotion.  It reveals surprise. It shows fear or anger, even pain.  It can be a statement used in direct address:  Oh, Mom!  You forgot the orange juice!  Oh can also express understanding:  Oh, I understand what that means now.  And oh can also merely mean agreement or acknowledgment of a statement:  Oh, you said that yesterday.  It is just an interjection, something that is thrown into a sentence to give the expression of emotion.
