DICTATION for Step Two



PREPARE IN ADVANCE FOR DICTATION

ALPHABET LETTER SOUNDS You dictate the letter and your student writes the letter that you say. You say, "k" and your student writes "K". You make the sound of "QU" and your student writes "QU". Remember Q doesn't have a sound without its helper U.

WORDS WITH DIGRAPHS You dictate the word and your student writes the letters that create the sound of the digraph in the word. You say, "each" and your student writes "ch".

phone (The student will not hear the final e. Tell your student that the sound of e is playing Hide and Seek.)

WORDS WITH BLENDS
You dictate the word and your student writes the letters that create the sound of the blend in the word. You say, "bring" and your student writes "br".

grab strum trip snip

spot stop swim smack

twig blot clash flag

gland plan

WHAT IS THE SOUND OF VOWELS HEARD IN THE MIDDLE OF WORDS?
You dictate the word and your student writes the letter that creates the vowel sound in the word. You say, "hat" and your student writes "a".

hat, mat, lap, strap, cap, man, hand, sand, cat, rat

fed, met, let, hen, men, when, send, lend, mend, gem

dim, him, his, lit, hit, fit, rim, rib, nip, bit, rip, lip

hot, not, pot, lot, mop, slop, rot, got, mom, Tom, bomb

hug, lug, slug, mug, rug, tug, thug, hut, pup, rub, nut

WORDS WITH VOWEL COMBINATIONS
You dictate the word and your student writes the letters that create the sound of the vowel combination in the word. You say, "bait" and your student writes "ai".

bait, laid, stay, day, maid, Kay, boy, lead, boat, steal, coat

pray, toe, toad, loan, bleed, tree, keep, leap, knee, reap

WORDS WITH DIPHTHONGS
You dictate the word and your student writes the letters that create the sound of the diphthong in the word. You say, "boy" and your student writes "oy".

NOW GO BACK AND REPEAT THE DICTATION OF ALL THE WORDS ON THIS PAGE

You dictate the word and your student writes the entire word that you dictate.

You say, "bring" and your student writes "bring".
You say, "each" and your student writes "each".
You say, "hat" and your student writes "hat".
You say, "boy" and your student writes "boy".
