HOW TO CLASSIFY LETTERS
When you classify letters or letter combinations in your lesson plans, you merely recognize a single Alphabetic letter as a VOWEL or as a CONSONANT. You recognize combinations of letters as DIGRAPHS, BLENDS, VOWEL COMBINATIONS or whatever category your lesson plans place the letter combinations in. Following are a few classifications to give you the idea:
Digraphs
sh, ch, tch, th, ck, wh, gh, gn, kn, ph
Blends
br, cr, dr, fr, gr, tr, str, sn, sp, st, sw, sm, tw, bl, cl, fl,
gl, pl
Vowel Combinations
ee, ea, ai, ay, oa
Vowel Diphthongs
aw, ew, ow, ou, oi, ou
R controlled vowels
ar, er, ir, or, ur, ire, are, air, ore, ure
Ending Sounds
ing, ss, ll, ang, alk, amp, ind, ight, y, ice, our, out
Long OO
oo
Short OO oo
S sounding like Z
Hard G
Hard C
Soft G
Soft C
